So many books and movies -- almost all of them, in fact -- portray the process of turning humans into water-breathers as SOME KIND OF A BAD THING.  Even loving portrayals, like Michael McDowell's Blackwater series, add blood, gore, and horror to the story. IT'S SO UNNECESSARY.
